Getting Closer to Allah: A complete guide

Getting Closer to Allah

Allah (swt) is nearer to you than your jugular vein. You benefit from being near to Allah (subhannahu wa ta’ala) as you will reap greater rewards both here and in the hereafter. Therefore, it is crucial to make a conscious effort to seek your Creator’s blessings and closeness.

There are a few things you need to do to get closer to Allah subnahu wa ta’la (glorified and exalted be He):

1- Strong desire to draw nearer to Allah subhanahu wa ta’la (glorified and exalted be He)

2- Patience

3- Consistency

4- Avoid acting or remaining passive for any reason other than Allah Subnahu Wa Ta’la’s (Glorified and Exalted Be He) benefit.

10 signs that you are close to Allah

You won’t suddenly be close to Allah SWT. Instead, you’ll see some things that give you the impression that Allah is drawing nearer to you. Only a select few people receive this honor from Allah.

A few indicators that you are among “Awliya” (friend of Allah SWT) will be discussed with you.

1. Those who love Allah SWT

They are the fortunate ones who genuinely love the Almighty. This is not because he is more substantial or can punish them anytime. They merely love Allah out of a desire to always have the All-Powerful’s blessing.

The Holy Quran refers to it.

“And among the mankind who takes from besides Allah equals. They love them as (they should) love Allah. And those who believe[d] (are) stronger (in) love for Allah. And if would see those who wronged, when they see the punishment that the power (belongs) to Allah all and [that] Allah (is) severe (in) [the] punishment.”

– Surah Al Baqarah; Verse 165

2. Individuals who make you think about Allah SWT

When the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was questioned about a good believer’s traits, he said:

“Those who, if they are seen, remind you of Allah. Shall I not tell you about the worst of you?”

“Those who carry gossip and ruin relations between loves ones, seeking misery for the innocent”

3. Individuals who are not afraid or grieve

The Holy Quran refers to it.

“No doubt! Indeed, (the) friends (of) Allah (there will be) no fear upon them and not they will grieve.”

–   Ayah Yunus; Verse 62

4. Individuals who experience fear after hearing verses of Allah SWT

In the Qur’an, Allah SWT say:

إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُهُ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُون

“Only the believers (are) those who, when mentioned of Allah, feel fear in their hearts, and when recited to them His Verses, they increase them (in) faith, and upon their Lord, they put their trust.”

– Surah Al Anfal; Verse 2

5. Individuals who consistently make Tawbah

Those who are close to Allah SWT continually repent of their sins. No matter how little a sin may appear, they never underestimate its severity. They also live in continual concern about making a mistake.

6. Those who often recall Allah SWT

The people who are constantly aware of their creator are the ones who are closest to Allah. According to the Holy Qur’an –

“Those who believe and find satisfaction in their hearts in the remembrance (of) Allah. No doubt, in the remembrance (of) Allah finds satisfaction in the hearts.”

– Ayah Ar Ra’d; Verse 28

7. These people don't speak much

As Muslims, we are still responsible for every word we say. The closest one to Allah SWT converse less precisely for this reason. Only when required, did they speak.

8. Those who love for Allah SWT's sake

The closest to Allah are those who adore what the All-Powerful loves. Likewise, abhors what Allah SWT abhors. These individuals are also close friends with devout and fearful individuals.

They always socialize with other suitable individuals. For the sake of Allah SWT, they would rather be by themselves than with unsavory company.

9. Generous individuals

Charity characterizes those who are friends with Allah SWT. They are incredibly giving and only keep what they need.

10. Those who are pious

The Holy Quran makes mention of it.

“Those who believe and are conscious (of Allah)”

– Surah Yunus; Verse 63

Piety, also known as Taqwa, has many different connotations, including faith in and awareness of Allah SWT and constant awareness of the hereafter and of things like hell, death, and heaven.

Advantages of getting closer to Allah

Being drawn closer to Allah SWT indicates that the Almighty wants you to always keep him in mind. It is essential that you continue to be productive as a Muslim. This demonstrates that Allah SWT pities you. It also suggests that he wants you to learn things that will help you.

It is stated that good actions are like pearl necklaces. One pearl immediately follows the other if the necklace snaps.

Abu Huraira recounted that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“I live in the thought of My servant as he thinks about Me, and I am with him as he remembers Me. And if he remembers Me in his heart, I also remember him in My Heart. If he remembers Me in the assembly, I remember him in the assembly better than he (does that), and if he draws near Me by the span of a palm, I draw near him by the cubit, and if he draws near me by the cubit I draw near him by the space (covered by) two hands. And if he walks towards Me, I rush towards him.”

– Sahih Muslim; Book 48, hadith 28

You’ll have to put up a fight in order to succeed. Your chances of success increase as you work more.

For you to get closer to Allah SWT, it will take quite a while. You can’t instantaneously make everything work with just one good deed. Allah SWT must always be your source of dependence and faith. The finest for you in this life and the next is intended for you by Allah SWT.
