Memorize Qur’an in 1 year: A complete guide for the best memorization

Memorize Quran in 1 year

Intention: The spark of every deed

The first and most important thing to do is to purify your intention. Purifying your intention means doing a good deed only for the sake of getting the reward from Allah, and not putting in mind people, their praise, or their criticism.

This is can be done if you sought the help of Allah to dismiss the show-off thoughts on your way to memorize Quran in 1 year and never quit doing the good deed because of feeling that your intention is not sincere enough.

17 is the key

After intention, you will have to start memorizing 17 verses every five consecutive days, while the sixth day is devoted to serious revision to finish memorizing Quran in 1 year. Before starting to memorize, the verses must be read correctly, and it is preferable to read the new verses in a proper manner, and the tutor must correct any errors if any.

In the beginning, recite the verses well and repeat them more than 20 times so that you can read the verses fluently, then close the Qur’an and memorize the verses without looking in the mushaf until they are completely memorized.

Make use of the revision day by repeating and revising what you have memorized before to fully memorize Qur’an in 1 year in the best manner possible.

Tips for easier memorization

1- Daily reading

It is an effective way that helps you memorize Quran in 1 year. Trying to dedicate some time to reading Qur’an and plan to finish reading Qur’an in a specific period that is not less than 7 days. This will help you increase your memorisation’s quality and add an extra edge to your revision.

2- Reciting out loud

It is better than a silent or low-voiced recitation.  Colin MacLeod, a psychologist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has conducted extensive studies on the effect of reading aloud on memory. The results of MacLeod and his colleagues’ studies proved that the participants were always more able to retrieve the vocabulary and texts they read aloud than the information they read silently.

MacLeod attributes people’s ability to remember spoken words by saying: “The spoken words are memorable and distinctive because you said them out loud.” people tend to remember special sayings.

3- Engaging multiple senses

Engaging many senses when reading saves you much time in memorization. Try to use your sense of touch by “tracking” verses from muṣḥaf using your index finger, which will help you focus without losing concentration.

Try also to use the sense of hearing combined with touching and sight. This will help increase your ability to retain and store verses in long-term memory. Listening in particular will make you always cautious about paying attention to the correct pronunciation of words in the Qur’an.

Rewards of Qur’an memorizing and recitation

  • Memorizing the Qur’an is a followed Sunnah. The Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, memorized the Noble Qur’an, and even used to review it with Gabriel, peace be upon him, every year.
  • ةThe Qur’an will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its people and its memorizers. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.”
  • The memorizer of the Qur’an is of high rank and high stature. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Such a person as recites the Qur’an and masters it by heart will be with the noble, righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur’an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.”
  • The real bliss lies in memorizing the Qur’an, as in the hadith: “Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Envy is justified regarding two types of persons only: a man whom Allah has given knowledge of the Qur’an, and so he recites it during the night and during the day…”

Obstacles on the way of memorizing Quran in 1 year

Feeling bored and daily routine: Dividing your day into a specific system and following this system regularly may create a state of stress and boredom and reduce the desire for Qur’an memorizing.

Abandoning revision: The revision informs us of the degree of our memorization of the Qur’an, and tells us of the strengths in memorization and the weaknesses that must be paid attention to or avoided.

Fast memorization: This is often negative in memorizing, because you expect to memorize many verses, and when you review, you will be surprised by a lower quality in memorization, so you can falter in memorization, which results in a state of sadness that reduces your desire to memorize.

Noise or causes of confusion: What concerns us in memorizing the Qur’an in 1 year is the good storage of the verses and what has been memorized to make retrieving them easier. The presence of confusion and noise next to you will delay the memorization process. If the memorization is done, it will be done less efficiently than usual and with low quality.

Don’t forget to understand

Don’t let memorization restrict you from understanding what you are memorizing. Understanding won’t only make it easier for you to memorize, but it will also help you feel the blessing of the words of Allah.

Start by reading a translation of the Quran in English or another language you can read easily. Read the most beginner-friendly version you can find so that you can truly concentrate on having a good read. Knowing the author and the motivation behind the book’s creation is crucial. Thinking deeply and prayerfully about the verses you are reading is crucial.

Always remember that memorizing Qur’an is the journey of your life, it’s a life goal, not a goal to work on for 1 year only. The best thing for which lifetimes are spent is the Book of Allah.
