ToggleLove for Allah’s sake is a unique type that differs from other forms of love, such as love for family or friends. It is a selfless love based on recognizing Allah’s greatness and the desire to seek His pleasure. It is a love that transcends the physical realm and connects one’s heart to the Divine.
Quranic Example: “Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'” (3:31(
Developing love for Allah’s sake is a gradual process that requires effort and dedication. The following are some steps that one can take to cultivate this love in their heart:
Increasing knowledge of Allah: The more one knows about Allah’s attributes, names, and teachings, the easier it becomes to love Him. Reading the Quran, studying the Hadith, and reflecting on the creation of Allah are all ways to increase one’s knowledge of Allah.
Quranic Example: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within the glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is knowing of all things.” (24:35)
Worshipping Allah with sincerity: Worshiping Allah with sincerity means doing so to seek His pleasure alone. This includes performing obligatory acts of worship, such as prayer and fasting, and voluntary acts of worship, such as charity and dhikr.
Quranic Example: “And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.” (98:5)
Seeking forgiveness for sins: Asking for forgiveness is essential to developing a love for Allah’s sake. Recognizing one’s faults and seeking forgiveness helps to purify the heart and increase one’s love for Allah.
Quranic Example: “And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (4:110)
Remembering Allah: Remembering Allah throughout the day through dhikr, or remembrance, helps to keep one’s heart connected to the Divine. This can be done through reciting the Quran, making duaa, or simply saying “Subhan Allah” (Glory be to Allah).
Quranic Example: “O you, who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance and exalt Him morning and afternoon.” (33:41-42)
Surrounding oneself with righteous company: The Company that one keeps can significantly impact their spiritual growth. Surrounding oneself with righteous individuals who encourage a love for Allah and His Messenger can help to strengthen one’s love for Allah.
Quranic Example: “And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart we have made heedless of our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.” (18:28)
The Quran contains examples of individuals who loved Allah for His sake. Some of these examples include:
Prophet Ibrahim (AS): Ibrahim’s love for Allah was so great that he was willing to sacrifice his son at Allah’s command. Muslims have commemorated this act of submission and love for Allah through the annual ritual of Eid al-Adha.
Quranic Example: “And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, ‘O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.’ He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.'” (37:102)
Prophet Musa (AS): Musa’s love for Allah was evident in his determination to stand up against Pharaoh, despite the great danger that he faced. He was steadfast in his faith and trusted in Allah’s power and guidance.
Quranic Example: “Musa said, ‘My Lord, indeed I have killed from among them someone, and I fear they will kill me. And my brother Aaron is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support, verifying me. Indeed, I fear that they will deny me.’ [Allah] said, ‘We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both supremacy so they will not reach you. [It will be] through Our signs; you and those who follow you will be the predominant.'” (28:33-35)
Prophet Muhammad (SAW): The Prophet’s love for Allah was evident in every aspect of his life. He devoted himself entirely to the service of Allah and the propagation of His message, despite his great hardships. His love for Allah was so great that he once said, “None of you will have faith until I am more beloved to him than his father, his children, and all of mankind.”
Quranic Example: “Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'” (3:31)
Love for Allah’s sake is a beautiful and transformative concept in Islam. It is a means of attaining spiritual fulfillment and connecting with the Divine. By increasing our knowledge of Allah, worshipping Him with sincerity, seeking forgiveness for our sins, remembering Him throughout the day, and surrounding ourselves with the righteous company, we can cultivate this love in our hearts.
