Every morning before Fajr (dawn), Abdullah would get up and run to the Mosque to perform the prayer. For Maghrib (sunset) and ‘Ishaa’ (evening) prayers, he would return to the Mosque. He regularly read the Qur’an. He spent his free time reading various Islamic texts. He devoted much of his leisure time to his family and took his position as the household’s spiritual leader very seriously.
Five years later, he discovered that he would frequently go days—and even weeks—without saying a single prayer. Because of his new employment, he no longer participates in the mosque’s congregational prayer. His new position required him to interact closely with individuals from dubious backgrounds in nightclub settings.
As a result, he developed a strong sense of secrecy about many of his professional endeavors. He even refrained from discussing them with his wife since he was certain she would disapprove. He worked all night and all weekend, never stopping. He started working alongside several of his new acquaintances and spending a lot of his leisure time with them. He spent less time with his family as a result of this. He couldn’t work at night, so he had to sleep during the day.
His wife observed a significant shift in his behavior. They talked extensively about his job, how it affected him, and how it related to his connection with Allah, the Almighty. He agreed and said he would start looking for new employment, but he ultimately decided to stay in his existing position. He soon realized how far apart from his wife and kids he felt. Even though he started with a lot of money, it was now barely enough to cover the bills.
He could feel the years of neglect causing his marriage to fall apart. He discovered himself giving in to depression over his situation and lacking the drive to start the actions he knew he would need to do in order for his life to improve.
It is noteworthy that ‘Abdullah’s life appeared to be considerably more tranquil and well-balanced when he was performing his regular religious responsibilities, and that he started to suffer significantly when he stopped doing them.
Could this be an accident? The scholar from North Carolina in the United States, Imam Muhammad Baianouni, aptly summarizes these circumstances by saying: “The regulation of a man’s behaviour within one system of life is one of the most essential grounds of success and stability. A guy’s biggest problem is the need for this regulation. This occurs when a person needs to be raised appropriately in accordance with the divine direction or when they are not given guidance from Allah, The Most High. Man’s existence becomes unpleasant under these conditions and will be counted among the losers in the Hereafter.

ToggleWe have been given a system of belief that instructs and aids in directing our actions and behavior, and this system of belief has only been given to us by Allah’s infinite wisdom and mercy. We are more likely to benefit from Allah’s bounty in this life and reap the rewards in the Hereafter if we adhere to the daily obligations of our faith as outlined in the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (may Allah exalt his mention). According to the Almighty, all believers must follow Allah’s commands in their worship and must not rebel against Him. The Quran states (what means) “So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allah], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.” [Quran 11: 112]
Our level of faith fluctuates during the course of our life. We experience both moments of high faith and times of difficulty. Many of my brothers and sisters who proudly identify as Muslims discover themselves accidentally “slipping” in their Islamic obligations. Their lives suddenly change from enjoyable and carefree to gloomy and uncertain, seemingly overnight. You may realise that your decisions lead you to where you are now, but you are still determining how to start making changes.
The only thing that prevents you from languishing in your darkest moments is remaining loyal in your obligations to Allah Almighty. Keep in mind that He Almighty is where you will ultimately return; therefore cultivate discipline and constancy in your daily practice to prevent your faith from ebbing away.
Being more disciplined begins with acknowledging your weaknesses. In fact, Allah Almighty states that a people’s status will only alter once they make changes within themselves. [Quran 13: 11] Allah will assist you in changing once you desire to do so for the benefit of Allah, the Almighty. No one will speak for you on the Day of Judgment; each person is accountable to themselves and will be interrogated accordingly. You must decide to live your life according to Allah’s Will.
Being instructed on what to do and how to change will not help you have a more fulfilling life. You need to be invested in implementing such changes for your own benefit. The benefits can only be reaped after that. Consider the prophets Noah and Lut’s wives; may Allah elevate their mention. everyone Prophet, may Allah be pleased with him and glorify him, endeavored vainly to provide his wife with the greatest advice, but due to their lack of genuine concern, it was told to every one of them: “…Enter the Fire with those who enter!”[Quran 66: 10]
A good buddy of mine was going through a challenging time. Her level of faith has never been lower. She complained that Allah Almighty was punishing her for not being a “good Muslim” during several of our chats. Why must Allah be punishing you, I questioned her. For us to better understand Him, Allah puts us through many hardships and testing in this life. We went back and forth for a while on this. She genuinely felt trapped in her debts of hopelessness and thought my comments were unnecessarily upbeat.
She may need this trial to serve as the wake-up call she needs to have the chance to refresh and redeem her faith and get nearer to Allah Almighty, I told her, adding that Allah Almighty is also Merciful. Maybe Allah had to make things so difficult for her to notice and have a chance to change.
You can use discipline in your daily life in a variety of ways. Such consistency balances not only our faith but also all other facets of our lives:
Make sure you are doing everything you can spiritually by regularly evaluating yourself.
Punctually offer your daily prayers every day.
Regularly read the Quran while making an effort to fully comprehend what you are reading.
Regularly seek out religious and other information through books, CDs and recordings, classes, and talks.
Join the company of the just.
Have faith in your religion and, more importantly, have faith in Allah.
Spend some time alone every day in prayer.
A whole way of life is Islam. We should want the discipline that enables us to control our lives and keep chaos at bay as believers. You have the right to calm and contentment if you choose this way of living. Consistently carrying out specified tasks leads to discipline.
